INCOMPATIBLE FOODS OR VIRUDHA AAHAARA
This is the most important rule to be followed in your day to day life. Ayurveda clearly explains the PRINCIPLE OF VIRUDHA AAHAAR – which means there are so many of the food articles which when taken together at one time or by combining or by processing in a wrong way – become indigestible in a wrong way – become indigestible to the human beings. In the body, they become difficult to digest or produce unwanted toxic chemicals or materials, which are either not, absorbed into the blood or when absorbed and circulate in the blood, cause various illnesses.
Modern specialists in various streams usually do not believe in this rule. When people take treatment from them, they are not told about what to eat or not. For example they do not prohibit curd in respiratory tract infections, as a result illnesses take a longer time to go and also came back very early.
After doing an extensive research on this concept, I have concluded that because the body is made and grown up by the food we eat so as the illnesses come as we wrong foods in a wrong way.
One of my patients, Mr Singh, 46 years of age from a village background was in a habit of taking curd or dahi ½ kg daily empty stomach for the last 4-5 yrs. He thought curd was very good for health slowly he developed chronic congested nose and postnasal drip. He was very disturbed and had visited, so may ENT specialists when he came to me and after looking history I first of all advised him to stop taking curd immediately. As curd is kapha increasing and blocking the channels of circulations, it produces kaphaj diseases when taken in excess and at wrong time and it is very much clearly contraindicated in Ayurvedic texts, not to take curd regularly.
Similarly many food items are advised not to take in combination, they are called Incompatible foods for example
- Milk + Fish, curd, sour fruits, khitchri bread.
- Curd + sour fruit, hot drinks, mangoes, bananas, cheese
- Egg + milk, curd, cheese, fruits, potatoes
- Lemon + curd, milk, cucumber, tomatoes.
- Potatoes, Tomatoes, Brinjal + curd, milk, cucumber
- Chicken + milk, black beans, radish, honey
- Milk + radish, onion, garlic
- Honey + ghee in equal proportion.
These are a few items to be mentioned here. You can have an advice from an Ayurvedic consultant acc to your body type. At our centre, we usually take a detailed history of the patient’s life of their last 10-20 yrs at least. And in most of the cases we get a reason for his/her present illness.
A person was suffering from urticarial rashes in the last 4-5 yrs. On inquiring he told he was very much found of cold drinks and used to take these aerated drinks in excess even with every meal. After a few yrs he developed these pittaz diseases, urticaria with allergic bronchitis, after correcting his daily habits and giving some rasayan drugs he was ok within 8-9 months.
AS MENTIOED IN CHARAK SAMHITA,
SUTRA STHAAN CHAPTER 26, VERS 81
Such of the drugs and diets that are unwholesome for the normal tissues and doshas of the body, are in fact opposed to the proper growth of each tissue elements and doshas.
Some of these act due to their mutually contradictory properties e.g. milk and sour fruits
Some by combination e.g. milk and bananas
Some by method of preparation
Some by virtue of the place, time and dose
Some other by their inherent nature

MAINTAINING GOOD HEALTH
One should eat in proper quantity but what is the amount of food in proper quantity for a particular individual. For example one person can eat 5-6 chapattis at one time and the other can have only 2-3 at a mealtime. So the proper quantity of the meals for a person is to be decided by his power of digestion. This quantity can be known only by co-relating the food taken with its proper digestion in a time limit.
If food taken in the evening does not disturb the internal equilibrium and gets digested and metabolised by the morning than that would be the standard measurement of food to be taken by the individual.
So when after taking the meals, if you are satisfied and do not feel any heaviness, flatulence in the abdomen, that much amount is the proper quality, you should have at one mealtime.
The rule is to followed strictly if you want to prevent 80-90% of the disorder and illness you are getting when you sit to have your lunch or dinner, just ask yourself – are you ready to have your meal? Is your previous food has been digested and you are feeling hungry? And you will get the real answer.
EATING IN PROPER QUALITY
EATING IN PROPER QUALITY
The proper quantity of food also depends upon the nature of food articles.
....If the food articles are heavy it is to be taken in less quantity in comparison to the light articles of food.
So, if you are going to have moong dal in your meals and you think, because it is light diet, you can take it in excessive in any amount.
That is to say, a light article can also be indigestible if taken in excessive quantity. Only your digestive power can tell you the right amount of food to be taken by you.
For a particular person it is usually advised that he can have light articles of food in greater amount and the heavy articles in lesser amount.
Food articles, which are just slightly heavy, are to be taken up to the extent of ¾ to of the stomach capacity.
Similarly, those which are heavier still, are to be taken in lesser quantity even the light articles, when are taken in larger quantity will hamper the process of digestion and metabolism as even a weapon which is made up of stone and it is even sharpened by stone, if is dashed against the stone in appropriately, it get blunted.
